Mind, Body & Spirit Friday, January 15th, 2010 | Rochester Woman Magazine
by Lindsay FerrinSo, you think you'll never drop the pounds because you've tried everything from fad diets to going to the gym 60 times a week, to starvation? You think you're too old, too busy, or too far gone to even begin to think about shedding some extra weight? Maybe a personal trainer isn't in the budget, you have to dine out too often, or your genetic composition (you were born to be overweight?) is prone to being "heavy"? This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the excuses, explanations and reasons we use to avoid stepping into the ring to fight weight loss and get in shape. Let's admit it: we've managed to conjure up enough stories, excuses and explanations to fill size 2XX slacks twice over! Okay: time to put Mind, Body and Spirit in the game! We all have our own personal "Apollo Creed" to step into the ring with…let's just remember that we can also approach weight loss like Rocky in our own Championship Title fight. Here are three approaches to weight loss to choose from - or combine. We have some hard facts for your mind, a bit of exercise and fitness for your body and the "Eye of The Tiger" to spark your spirit. Let's roll up our sleeves, duck under the rope, bounce back and forth on our toes (like Rocky does before the big fight) and go a few rounds with this worthy opponent! ROUND ONE: CHUCK VALENTE, OWNER OF THE DIET DOC PERMANENT WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM 585.383.0530 145 West Commercial Street East Rochester NY MaxFitOnline.com So, you think you'll never drop the pounds because you've tried everything from fad diets to going to the gym 60 times a week, to starvation? Let's roll up our sleeves, duck under the rope, bounce back and forth on our toes (like Rocky does before the big fight) and go a few rounds with this worthy opponent! ROUND TWO: ROBYN CHASE, IRON BUTTERFLY HEALTH CLUB, LLC. AND ISAGENIX 585.234.BFLY 7493 State Route 96 Victor NY 14564 IronButterflyFitness.com Is there anybody out there who wants to focus on their "body"? Sweatpants and sneakers are proper attire for Round Two, which features fitness and nutrition to "Do A Body Good." If getting your heart pumping, your feet jumping and finding new ways to feed your body are up your alley, then read on. Robyn Chase, from Iron Butterfly Health Club, is ready to show you the ropes! Robyn Chase isn't unlike hundreds of women out there: she has to hold down a full time job, raise a family and tried real hard for years to find a minute to get and stay healthy herself on top of taking care of everything else. But, as the years went on, despite the fact that she was a fitness instructor and owned her own gym, nothing changed and the pounds were winning the battle. Today, Robyn is proud to say she has triumphed over the battle of the bulge and credits her victory to focusing on her body with exercise, proper nutrition and a lifestyle that incorporates overall personal health care. Robyn also stresses "Regular Exercise Structured For Long Term Success," and says that it's important to set realistic goals and get the guidance and knowledge to accomplish them. Iron Butterfly Health Club focuses on body fat reduction, weight management, body shaping, and toning. Workouts, weights and cardio exercise are all part of the program. "The key is to expect results and transform yourself," says Robyn. If you combine a regime of workouts and proper nutrition, you can get twice the benefits in half the time, right? Robyn explains, "In my gym, I am also often approached by reps trying to sell nutrition products that are supposed to help people lose weight. I am a natural skeptic. I chose to try the Isagenix program because it was different. Isagenix, the World Leader in Nutritional Cleansing™, develops and manufactures systems to assist in weight management, long-term wellness and skincare." "I decided that if I was going to endorse it, I'd better be sure that it worked first. I also thought that it might help me get on the fast track to losing those extra pounds. So I put my money where my mouth is - I tried it, fell in love with the results and now I can say that Isagenix plus exercise IS the way I lost 50 pounds in just 5 months, it changed my world." ROUND THREE: MICHELLE CHARLES AND CONNIE THORTON, GODDESS HOUR FITNESS AND DANCE STUDIO 585.224.0277 1470 Monroe Avenue, Rochester NY 14618 GoddessHour.com It's time to trade that sweat suit and those sneakers in for a sachet of silky scarves and a pair of stunning stilettos for this one. This is an adventure into the sensual, spiritual side of weight loss. So, if you don't care to "think" yourself thin and a sweaty workout doesn't do it for you…this might just be the way to go. Round Three takes us to the spiritual side with a very seductive challenger in the fight against weight gain. It is perfectly possible that the last time you saw a belly dancer was on TV. Few of us even know a person who knows how to do it - or, they keep it a secret! We have to admit that the men in our lives would love it if we came home and performed a dance of ANY kind, but if we could belly dance, that would be even better yet, right? Let's face it: it's not the most popular activity around. Rochester is fortunate to have its very own dance studio devoted to the art of belly dancing. At Goddess Hour Dance and Fitness Studio the motto is: "Real women have curves…Goddesses know how to move them." Michelle Charles and Connie Thorton believe that getting in shape can be playful, fun and sexy, and they're here to show you how to let your spirits soar as you shake, slide and seduce your way to a Goddess-like physique. Michelle and Connie promise to invigorate your body with an imaginative approach to fitness, to stimulate your mind and maintain motivation with a wide variety of programs that will empower your spirit through improved self-confidence, no matter what your age, weight or coordination. They also hope to forge new friendships along the way. "We can't help but get to know our clients," says Michelle. It gets pretty personal around here!" So, whether you choose Pole Dancing, Belly Dancing or The Cardio Strip, it promises to be a new approach to an old problem. Other interesting and creative choices include Hip-Hop, Zumba, Yoga, Bollywood, Art of Exotic and Hula Hooping. Michelle says, "When a session begins, some of the students are naturally tentative and somewhat quiet. By the end of the session, the hair comes down, the spirits go up, and friendships are made. They truly become goddesses in every sense!" Goddess Hour Dance and Fitness offers flexible class times - so if after work works for you, then you can choose to participate in evening sessions. If you prefer to get into Goddess mode before work, then there are classes that meet in the morning. They are open all day as well - so it's easy to find a time to stop in and see what all of the Goddesses are up to - and learn how to move your curves like a Goddess! ©2010, Rochester Woman Magazine, LLC.
