Making Dollars & Sense Friday, January 15th, 2010 | Rochester Woman Magazine
by Lindsay FerrinEach January, we make resolutions for the New Year ahead of us. It's true that by February, most of us have left them by the wayside. This year, let's make a resolution to keep our resolutions starting with our financial health. When it comes to your finances, the start of a new year is a great time to put things in order. We resolve to help you put your financial life in order in January and vow to keep it under control until December. In our Dollars and Sense column, we will bring you through the year with a monthly subject to help you realize this resolution. It's easier than you think to do a few simple things that will get you on the way to making 2010 a year to remember as the one that you finally took control of your finances. It's understandable that there may be some reluctance to committing to such a lofty goal for the year. Most of us live happily in financial ignorant bliss. We probably don't even balance our checkbooks, let alone plan for retirement or get the best interest rates for our credit cards; it's just so overwhelming to keep it all straight sometimes, isn't it? But, Rochester Woman Magazine promises to keep this heavy subject as light and approachable as possible. Heck, you might even look forward to reading this column every month! Our plan is to focus on a variety of financial topics that are of common interest or concern. Many of these areas can be confusing and intimidating and are a complete curiosity to those of us who are not financial whizzes. We'll walk you through the topics that affect your wallet, your savings and your retirement accounts. We'll look at ways to create and stay on a budget and talk about better ways to save money and earn more. If terms such as "investment strategy," "annuities," and "IRA" sound like more like rocket science than they do English, don't worry; we'll put all the information you're looking for into plain language that you can understand. It'll all make sense, we promise. We are pleased to be including local experts who will serve as your guides to each monthly topic. You'll meet the people who know the world of money matters and you'll learn about everything from financial planning, investments, savings and loans to mortgages, interest rates and retirement planning. Our panel will offer their advice and expertise. They will extend a helping hand and serve as resources in their respective fields. We'll refer you to websites and local sites for additional information and assistance with money matters throughout the year. Next month, we will take a detailed look at taxes. Tax time threatens to be more complicated than ever this year, with all of the unusual financial turmoil our crazy, uncertain and volatile economy dealt us this past year. Like many, maybe you have investments that may have been a loss. Perhaps widespread unemployment has touched close to home as well. We'll talk about the probable challenges that filing your 2009 tax forms will bring. So, when it's time to talk to Uncle Sam, you'll keep your resolution by talking with Rochester Woman Magazine first. 2010 will be an exciting year to move forward and keep your resolution to get your financial life in order. We look forward to being your guide, beacon and support system as you move through the year and can finally - maybe for the first time even - declare that you kept your resolution! ©2010, Rochester Woman Magazine, LLC.
