In & Out if Town Friday, February 19th, 2010 | Rochester Woman Magazine
by Polly HendricksThe Canal Lamp Inn Pittsford, NY Who would have thought that one of our mini date getaways would take place one mile from the home I grew up in off Washington Road in Pittsford. The Canal Lamp Inn right on the canal in Pittsford Village is a perfect little hideaway for a romantic evening with the hubby. Picture a lovely Victorian home inspired with romance and piqued with a McKenzie-Childs flair. Our room, with the four poster bed laden with lavish sheets overlooked the canal. The bathroom was enormous with a two person tub, glass enclosed shower and all the amenities you'd find in an expensive hotel. It was fun to meet friends at jojo right across the street and be the envy of the evening knowing we were just a minute away from our romance filled getaway! There is simply no better breakfast served in Pittsford than here, at the Canal Lamp Inn. Eggs made to order, waffles made with love and every detail more perfect than the next. Ribbon wrapped silverware, flowers in the antique water glass, lace napkins that the owners themselves ironed just for us! Sunday morning we took in the town. It's funny. I grew up in Pittsford. Tom and I own a home in the Village. But how often do we stroll hand in hand into every quaint store and say to ourselves "Isn't this store just darling?" Tom bought me presents as if we were on a trip to Nantucket! But we were in Pittsford, New York - my hometown and just 12 minutes away from our own home in Fairport. The Canal Lamp Inn. Romance is just minutes away.... Turning Stone Resort & Casino Verona, NY The only thing better than date night is "date weekend" for busy couples! One of our favorite stops is Turning Stone Resort and Casino, a mere 90 minutes away. It's enlightening to realize that you can experience world - class hotel rooms, dining and entertainment within a two hour window. We always stay at The Lodge; the suite is breathtaking. Is there really such luxury in Verona, New York? We typically arrive early afternoon and take a short nap, (just because we can!) and then head down to the pool and hot tub. Is it a pool or organic waterfalls? Are we in Colorado? It's difficult to believe that we're only 90 minutes from home! A quick change and we're in the casino for a few minutes of gambling. A quick glance at the watch and it's time for dinner in one of their five restaurants. Forest Grill is truly five star dining with an expansive wine list and sommelier. Well, thank goodness we got that nap in because our evening of premier entertainment is about to begin. We grab our stocked cooler and head out…remember Turning Stone is BYOB. They don't serve liquor, but you're welcome to bring your own. It's now 8 o'clock and we're in the theater… a throwback to the old dinner shows… cocktail booths and stadium seating - I love it! Finally, TOWER of POWER comes out on stage, belting out "What is Hip?" I'm on fire! Dancing! I'm singing at the top of my lungs! The next morning we sleep in and order room service. The New York Times is at our door and life is good. We've secured our sitter until 4 o'clock so we have plenty of time to do whatever we'd like. We play tennis for an hour at the new facility and return for another short nap (just because we can!) and then head home. It's 2:30 but we're only 90 minutes away.
